Session Description

This presentation is the result of my academic paper done in cooperation with the Sociology Dept of Sacramento State University, 2007. My sponsoring organizations are Children's Hope, and Sacramento Progressive Alliance. I am a single mother, with a degree in fine art photography and a grad student in Sociology. I have received two humanitarian awards in Sacramento for my international human rights work. I founded Children's Hope, which is a humanitarian organization that has provided support for organizations in Sacramento (Freedom Bound Center), in the US (Katrina) and in Haiti, where I travel twice a year to deliver medical and school supplies.

The title of the work is Race, Gender and Poverty, which, as the name suggests, speaks about how race and gender are predictors of poverty in the US.
I have a complete power point presentation and lecture, questions will be taken. It sounds to me as though the Thursday, June 28th (Current struggles) session would best fit my presentation. And while I would hope for good attendance to this session, without knowing your previous attendance records, it is hard for me to say how many conference goers will choose this session. I have presented to groups as large as 100 in the past. My presentation will be in English. Some full copies of the report will be available after the presentation, and more are available on request.

There are several reasons why this study is important. First, it is significant that race continues to be an important predictor of inequity in our society. Also, two out of three impoverished adults in the U.S. are women and the problem is getting worse, instead of better. When we combine race and gender, the problem becomes a nightmare. The 2005 US Census Bureau reports that of related children under six years of age living in families with women of color as head of households - 52.9% of these children live in poverty!

I hope that the participants will gasp at this information (as has been my experience). I also hope that in subsequent days they will use the information they learn in this session to break down myths of US success. I cannot imagine working on solutions without really understanding the problems.
