This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Room 1203 room at the Westin Hotel View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThe Media Justice of the Funding Exchange recognizes that social and
economic justice will not be realized without the equitable
redistribution and control of resources that necessarily includes media
and communication technologies. The Fund supports leadership of people
of color, low-income and LGBT communities, and youth working within
traditionally marginalized communities to organize around media to
affect accountability, infrastructure and policy. Session DescriptionNodbody would deny that the media in the U.S. is experiencing fundamental changes. Owing largely to our increasingly hyper capitalist csociety, the public is limited to the single role of "consumer" and information is viewed soley as a "commodity." As a result, both the content and, more importantly, the way these roles are being shaped, have an enormous impact on our vision of health care, immigration, homelessness, etc. The purpose of this panel is to imagine the (un)thinkable – to push the boundaries of current research on social, political, and technological changes in media, in order to further understanding of the potential implications of these changes in the areas of community television, radio, and internet from the perspectives of people of color, low-income, women, and other traditionally marginalized communities. The discussion will focus on demonstrating possibilities for the integration of different demands and interests within the Media Justice movement as well as suggest possible strategies for a more favorable scenario. Presenters: Jeanette Foreman (Southern Media Justice Coalition) moderated by Hye-Jung Park (Program Officer for the Media Justice Fund) * The fomat of this panel is more interactive session. We will have a breakout session so that participants can fully be invovled in building strategies.
