Session Description

2 Hours

Indigenous women around the world are facing discrimination and violence at the hands of the state, the community and the family at epidemic proportions. This workshop explores colonization, its influence on power structures within Indigenous communities and its impact on female/male relationships. Panelists will examine international human rights laws and state obligations related to ending discrimination and violence against women and will discuss recent findings of the United Nations calling the United States and Canada to account for its failure to protect Indigenous women from violence. Finally, panelists will lead participants in small group discussion around recovery tools and monitoring mechanisms to provide feedback in follow-up reports.
