Session Description

4 hour workshop
Emerging from humble inspiration, Four Directions Solidarity Network (
www.eswn.org ) has grown to become a network of
both indigenous and non-indigenous supporters working to empower
sovereign and sustainable indigenous communities and the preservation
of traditional knowledge. But how did this network and our partnering
organizations overcoming traditional barriers to movement building
between native and non-native people?
We invite you to join us in this compelling workshop that will explore
“decolonizing your mind” from both North American and European
native perspectives. Take a multi-media and experiential journey to a greater
understanding of indigenous solidarity by discovering the roots of
indigenous culture - its living history, examining critical forces that
have shaped indigenous/non-indigenous relationships, and finishing our
journey by exploring the unique mutual-aid work of Four Directions
Solidarity Network and our partnering organizations such as the
Strongheart Civil Rights Movement of South Dakota.
The workshop will be divided into four sections to more fully explore
this critical movement building topic:

Section 1 – Indigenous Resistance Struggles of North America
–Examples
Section 2 – The Loss of a Native European Life Way and its Affects
Section 3 – Decolonizing Your Mind
Section 4 – Building an Integrated Indigenous Solidarity Movement
At the end of this four hour workshop (including breaks), participants
will:
1. Understand the concepts of an indigenous lifeway, living history,
and indigenous solidarity from a variety of cultural perspectives.
2. Examine historical forces that affect indigenous solidarity
including the conceptual process of “decolonizing your mind.”
3. Learn specific actions to take that begin the process of
“decolonizing your mind.”
4. Analyze specific forces that have shaped indigenous/non-indigenous
relationships and examples of efforts to overcome these forces.
5. Explore the work of Four Directions Solidarity Network, Strongheart
Civil Rights Movement and related projects.
We share our gratitude for your participation.
