This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Roswell room at the Renaissance Atlanta Hotel Downtown View scheduleOrganization DescriptionOn New Ground (SONG) was founded in order to advance Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer multi-racial, multi-issued education and organizing capable of combating the Right’s strategies of fragmentation and division.
SONG’s visionis is that of a broad social and economic justice movement across the South, its mission to help build and strengthen that movement, and its strategy one of of multi-issue organizing.
We are a regional southern organization who prioritizes the leadership of working class and queer people of color across the rural and urban south. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gendered, queer) identify as people of color are 25 years old or younger are immigrants (not born in U.S.) are artists/cultural workers are diasabled are 65 years or older Session DescriptionWe are hoping to convene a bilingual (English & Spanish) workshop session that can be facilitated-discussion format. We are working out of framework of centering the experience of Southern Queer people to build our collective power to resist the misuse of gender and sexuality by the Right to divide us in our common struggles against colonization, exploitation and violence in all its forms. The Right has successfully used gender and sexuality to mobilize grassroots support for their agendas against the best interests of poor, working class and immigrant communities and communities of color. Against this agenda, we will explore the ways that we can build shared political framework and grassroots strategies towards integrating rather than subjugate gender and sexuality across our movements, sustainable and politically aligned approaches to collective healing, sexual and gender liberation, and anti-racism & anti-oppression practices and protocol within Gay, Lesbian, Bi & Trans centered and led movement work. We also want to get a chance to throw down with other movement people and talk about working towards developing new grass-roots and regional based protocol for political education, grass-roots and regional organizing , cultural work, and developing alternative infrastructure to non-profit based 501c3 organizations, with a vision based on democratic practice, anti-oppression frameworks and liberation-oriented broad based strategies.
