This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 3:30pm It will be held at: Centennial Ballroom B room at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThe Texas Media Empowerment Project (Texas MEP) is a regional media/social justice group connected to a national network of media justice communities. We believe that fighting for a fair media system cannot be separate from making the world a more just, and equitable place. Our goal is to empower marginalized communities with the knowledge and skills they need to strategically use all aspects of media & technology more effectively, taking back the power to define themselves, their needs and their vision, and empowering people with knowledge and skills to make media work for justice in their communities. We are a co-op of individuals, grass-roots organizations, and volunteers, particularly people of color, women, queer LGBT and low-income people. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women Session Description"No Women's Media, No Women's Progress" Donna Allen, founder of Women Institute for Freedom of the Press, stated in the mid 1970s. This is critically true today. Feminist/womanist issues are almost completely lacking in mainstream media. Women produced media, skills building programs, advocacy efforts are key in advancing the multi-faceted issues and concerns of a broad range of women. In this session, grassroots media justice workers will describe their successes. Further we will brainstorm on how we can collaborate on projects to give our work greater visibility and reach. In particular, we will explore how we can interact on a global scale with such dynamic projects as the Women's Media Pool, which was initiated for Beijing 10+. This session encourages the artistic, organizational and political talents of women, and will inspire other participants, media producers, filmmakers, BlogHers, culture-jammers, and others working to address local to (g)local social justice issues. Panelists: Jan Stout Euneika Rogers TBA - Member of the Chilpancingo Collective for Environmental Justice Moderator: Objectives: Interact in a global forum to address women’s representation and leadership in media and intersecting social justice issues Build on a national network to strategize, and build a base for formal and informal collaborative feminist media change among participants.
