The Board of Directors and Advisors includes leaders of various communities and movements in the Seattle area. The CSJ current focuses are criminal justice reform, poverty and housing issues, and global justice efforts. The-TREE Institute Theatre for Resistance, Education and Empowerment is a form of using arts as political tool to educate and empower people for political action against social oppression. Based on Popular and Political Education, by Paulo Freire, and Theatre of the Oppressed, by Augusto Boal, we aim to engage the public in performances and workshops for both reaching critical consciousness and for organizing and empower communities to act – not react – by facing the challenges of power and changing societies. The Board of Directors and Advisors is formed by a group of social activists and theatre Jokers from the Northwest engaged in community-based work, actions to end torture, Immigrants workers rights, Youth and Women critical leadership, and others connected issues.

Session Description

Have you taught about what does it means to be a Citizen? Who is in fact a Citizen, a born-Citizen or an Immigrant-Citizen? Can you see yourself as a Citizen of the world? This interactive workshop is for Visionary people who would like to engage in a live discussion, through the process of critical consciousness for envisioning that Another World is possible for the CItizens of the World! That the borders, the real ones and the imginarey ones, built to separate people and familes must be put down! Based on the techinique of Circle of Culture and Popular and Political Education, by Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and political activist, this workshop is a call to all persons interested in Movements for Social Justice based on people’s actions for social transformation!

Participants will be guided by Sandra Hernandes an experienced Theatre of the Oppressed Joker, Brazilian social activist and Popular and Political Educator, to a process of co-creation of new view and common critical consciousness of what it means to be a Citizen!

This topic addresses the USSF themes of Visioning/Envisioning Another World.
aiming commit participants to their own critical consciouness and World view as critical Citizens of the World as a means to support this National Movement being developed by so many NGO’s and Community-based organizations as well as individuals. The biggest enemy of our social justice work has been the American people/society as the majority is not aware how they support, even unconsciously, the actual government. Moreover, people in this Social Forum should leave with the certain that we can fight together for social Change and that Action is needed now!

Logistics: in open space, if possible a large room/area with chairs were up to 40 people can interact, listening to each other and engage in the process of acting out. The workshop will be in English with a possible simultaneous translation into Spanish. Handouts will be provided in both English and Spanish.
