The Board of Directors and Advisors includes leaders of various communities and movements in the Seattle area. The CSJ current focuses are criminal justice reform, poverty and housing issues, and global justice efforts. The-TREE Institute Theatre for Resistance, Education and Empowerment is a form of using arts as political tool to educate and empower people for political action against social oppression. Based on Popular and Political Education, by Paulo Freire, and Theatre of the Oppressed, by Augusto Boal, we aim to engage the public in performances and workshops for both reaching critical consciousness and for organizing and empower communities to act – not react – by facing the challenges of power and changing societies. The Board of Directors and Advisors is formed by a group of social activists and theatre Jokers from the Northwest engaged in community-based work, actions to end torture, Immigrants workers rights, Youth and Women critical leadership, and others connected issues.

Session Description

A Forum Theatre performance by a group of college students to engage the public in critical process of questioning how and why transnational corporations, free trade agreements, and international financial institutions, such as IMF, World Bank, and WTO have grown as they are in agreement and are the biggest social oppressors of the world.
Plus, this performance looks to raise in the public questions about the Immigrants Movement and the government interests in avoid a solution for such a social injustice, is connected with economic actions against the Citizens of the World. But also, to raise people awareness that the Immigrants Movement is a third big moment of American history preceded by Slavery Abolition and Civil Rights, the three big “Rites of Passage” of this society.

Performers guided by the Theatre of the Oppressed Joker Sandra Hernandes, a Brazilian social activist, Popular and Political Educator, will engage the public with scenes of oppression representing these social forces against people’s freedom of expressing themselves and living as free citizens in any part of the world.

This topic addresses the USSF themes of Critical Consciousness and Awareness and Strategizing for an Another World.
We aim to address people’s needs to develop critical consciousness and to understand that politics is part of human nature, because people are taught – mainly through the official formal education process that politics is for the government. Thus, the biggest enemy of our social justice work has been the American people/society as the majority is not aware how they support, even unconsciously, the actual government.

Engaging the Audience: the public at certain point of the performance is called to come and ACT over their own reflections and perceptions about what they were watching.

Logistics: in open space, if possible a stage or visible place, were at list 150 to 200 people can watch and listen to engage in the process of acting out. The performance will be in English with a possible translation into Spanish. Handouts will be provided in both English and Spanish.
