This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 10:30am It will be held at: Olympic B room at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThe Global Women's Strike network, with national co-ordinations in 11 countries and participating organisations in over 60 countries, is demanding the return of military budgets to the community, beginning with women the main carers of people and the planet. Women, and men who support our goals, take action together on 8 March, International Women’s Day, and throughout the year. In this way each grassroots struggle is backed by our collective power. Women from different sectors are involved: Women of colour, Indigenous & rural women, mothers, women in waged work, lesbian & bisexual women, sex workers, religious activists, women with disabilities, older & younger women... Women of Color in the Global Women's Strike (WOC in the GWS) is an independent grassroots network of women of color – African, Asian, Caribbean, Indigenous, Native American, Kurdish, and others – within the GWS. WOC in the GWS aims to bring out the impact on women of color of military budgets, war, cutbacks in services, and other social and economic policies, as well as to make visible how women of color are organizing against those policies. Payday is an international and multiracial network of men which works with the Global Women’s Strike. Like the rest of the Strike, Payday is independent of political parties. Payday's main initiative in the last few years has been Refusing to Kill: gathering support around the world for men and women who refuse to torture, maim, rape and kill for the military --initiating international campaigns in support of refuseniks in Israel, Turkey and the US; and highlighting the key role that women play in supporting conscientious objectors, “deserters”, draft evaders and whistleblowers.
