Organization Description

The Praxis Project is a national, nonprofit organization that builds partnerships with local groups to influence policymaking to address the underlying, systemic causes of community problems. Committed to closing the health gap facing communities of color, we forge alliances for building healthy communities. Our internationally recognized staff employ their broad experience in training, advocacy, policy development, media relations and technical assistance to support local organizations as they work to advance their vision of a healthy, just community. We help local groups hold institutions and governmental agencies accountable by designing community-based plans, conducting research, developing media strategies and developing policy initiatives – to achieve sustainable results. Our goal is to build power at the local level to increase the capacity of communities to become effective advocates so that they are leaders and catalysts on the legislative and policy decisions that affect their lives.

Session Description

This session proposes to bring together an intergenerational assemblage of African American female internationalists to discuss how we incorporate a global perspective into our movement building work. With representation from every decade from teens to 50-somethings, participants will include Laura Parish, Jotaka Eaddy, Shani Jamila, Makani Themba Nixon and Dr. Deborah Robinson.

We will touch on an array of issues including:
 The history of Black internationalism and theories of travel
 How to use international human rights mechanisms to advance advocacy on domestic issues that affect people of color
 Youth perspectives on gender and globalization
 Health justice as it relates to the global economy and community organizing
 A critical examination of the discourse around the contemporary state of Black struggle domestically and worldwide
This discussion will incorporate a number of the USSF themes such as international solidarity, movement building, an intersectional analysis of oppression, and sustaining the ability to envision another world in our contemporary socio-political climate.

Our goal is to engage the audience in an open discussion about successful strategies on how to link social justice issues in their respective areas of work. This interactive forum will be presented in English, and we will make every effort to have translation equipment available to attendees.
