Session Description

Bolivia is in the midst of profound transformations in this historic moment. Come join us for a session where we learn around strategic changes occurring in Bolivia as the country shifts from a system of domination to one of sovereignty. As an alternative to the ‘free trade’ model, the Bolivian government is promoting ‘A Peoples Trade Agreement’ based on a radically different set of values and principles. We will explore how successful experiences and lessons learned from Bolivia can inform our struggle in the U.S. context.

The session will review changes to the Constitution currently being proposed, including:
1. Bolivia’s vision for a sovereign country- Rights of indigenous peoples; land, territory and natural resources. Bolivia has 36 national peoples and a vision of a pluri-national state where every nationality has rights, lands and autonomous space.
2. Recognition of territorial autonomy of Indigenous and Original Peoples and Campesinos, including recognition of judicial plurality- where the indigenous courts are recognized as binding over state courts.
3. Implications of this new system for property and natural resources.
