Organization Description

Al-Fatiha Foundation is dedicated to Muslims who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, or exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity, and their familes, their friends and their allies. Al-Fatiha promotes the progressive Islamic notions of peace, equality and justice. We envision a world that is free from prejudice, injustice and discrimination, where all people are fully embraced and accepted into their faith, their families and their communities. Founded in 1998, Al-Fatiha Foundation is a U.S.-based non-profit organization, with sister organizations in Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Amnesty International's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. In pursuit of this vision, AI's mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights. AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

Session Description

Activists are frequently encouraged to give the movement their "all," but often there is little support to make this sustainable and healthy for people's real lives; the workshop facilitators will address these concerns and provide usable, practical tools through this workshop.

Movement-building takes time and stamina. Many times, activists are doing more than they realize. With so many human rights and social justice issues and seemingly never enough people responding, activists often find themselves facing a losing battle and burning out. This workshop will provide strategies for avoiding burnout; managing information and time; evaluating our work; and celebrating successes. Participants will leave with strategies to take care of themselves and keep themselves motivated for the long haul.

This workshop will be very interactive and facilitators will focus the session on the particular needs expressed by workshop participants. Small and large group activity will help participants to develop useful strategies and these will be shared through large group discussion. Facilitators will provide handouts and the workshop will be conducted in English.
