This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Gateway Performance Productions -Mask Center room at the Little Five Points Community Center View scheduleOrganization DescriptionArt in Action Youth Leadership Program uplifts and transforms the lives of young artists impacted by violence and poverty. Our annual summer camps and year-round programs create hope and opportunity through socially relevant popular education, community-building, and creative expression geared toward developing solutions. Art in Action provides a supportive, positive place for young leaders to cultivate leadership through dance, theater, music, spoken word/poetry, painting, storytelling, and media arts. For six years, we have been convening groups of 25 young people for a 5 to 10 day overnight experience. Workshops include, “Linking the Issues,” in which youth connect local to global issues. Participants choose from core groups: dance/theater; spoken word/music; and visual or media arts/giant puppets. To culminate, we join together in a performance that speaks to the critical issues of our time. Art in action is run primarily by women of color, and mostly serves working-class youth, with an emphasis on supporting queer youth and youth of color. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gendered, queer) identify as people of color are 25 years old or younger are artists/cultural workers Session DescriptionThe power of art and creative expression can revitalize political groups and movements for justice. Learn how to build powerful, sustainable teams that truly got each other's backs. Learn how to use performing arts to get media attention and attract new folks to get involved. If you are tired of boring groups, actions or events, we feel you. Let's use our deepest humanity, the ability to create to empower our collective visions, compel others, and move us all forward. Learn how to make performances with a message, while remembering how powerful you are as a creative being. Have a blast learning fun skills that bring even the most unlikely groups together in new ways. Learn how to make "Democracy Dances" where everyone becomes the choreographer, whether they have a performance background or not. If you got a body, you can do this!
