This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Auditorium Back Left room at the Atlanta Civic Center View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThe Peoples Health Movement (www.phmovement.org) challenges the root causes of ill-health in our communities by bringing together health professionals, economists, journalists and health analysts with grassroots health workers and community activists in a united front to reveal unjust policies and develop healthier alternatives. In over 70 countries, and through international activism, the People’s Health Movement (PHM) calls into question the social, economic and political forces that undermine people’s health and, in particular, the health of poor and marginalized people. PMH works for “Health for All NOW,” as expressed in its People's Charter for Health (www.phmovement.org/en/resources/phcharter), the most widely endorsed consensus document on health since the Alma Ata Declaration of 1978.
The People' Charter for Health is a call for action to make Health for All a reality. Health for All based on these basic principles:
• The highest possible level of health and well-being is a fundamental human right, regardless of a person’s color, ethnic background, religion, gender, age, abilities, sexual orientation or class.
• Governments have a fundamental responsibility to ensure universal access to quality healthcare (and other social services).
• Health is primarily determined by the political, economic, social and physical environment and should be a top priority in local, national and international policy-making.
• The participation of people and people’s organizations is essential to the formulation and implementation of all health and social policies and programs.
PHM-USA (www.phm-usa.org) is the US geographic circle of the international movement. PHM-USA believes that PHM's global perspective is relevant to the US health and health care crisis, and that a global perspective is needed to achieve universal, comprehensive primary health care in the US. PHM USA efforts currently focus on building two new campaigns that will help strengthen activism in the US and link US activists with People’s Health Movement efforts world wide. These two campaigns are: Right to Health Care, and Right to Water. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women identify as people of color are immigrants (not born in U.S.) Session DescriptionIn the United States as in the rest of the world, our healthcare systems are woefully inadequate, and the improvement of health is a shared challenge. The vision of the People’s Health Movement represents a way forward to create a world in which the cynical and shameful reality of health for all who can pay, is replaced by the achievable goal of health for all. This vision of health is not limited to the absence of illness, rather we see health as a general state of well-being. As such it is a fundamental human right, regardless of a person’s color, ethnic background, religion, gender, age, abilities, sexual orientation or class. This workshop will include panel presentations and participatory activities to explore a vision of Health for All that we can achieve in the United States, and the rest of the world, that includes: Panel presentations include: Health disparities and racism: How challenging racism and other social factors is key to achieving Health for All.
