This session will be on: June 30, 2007 - 10:30am It will be held at: Room 1406 room at the Westin Hotel View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThe Progressive Technology Project (PTP) seeks to raise the scope and scale of technology resources available to grassroots community organizing groups working for environmental, economic, and social justice. PTP provides training, technical assistance and grants to develop the capacity of grassroots organizing groups through the use of information technology.
PTP's goals include:
* Help grassroots groups to obtain new technology skills that advance their ability to improve the quality of people's lives
* Explore, create and share models of technology use that increase the organization's power and effectiveness by adding value to grassroots organizing
* Develop a program of technical assistance to address the unique needs that grassroots organizations face in their use of technology
* Leverage resources to support the use of information technologies by grassroots organizations
* Create a place for strategic discussions about the relationship between grassroots organizing and technology
Many people and communities are being left behind by the growing divide between those who have access to information technologies and those who don't. Grassroots groups in particular have not been able to take advantage of the powerful potential that technology offers to advance their work. PTP works to support the development of skills, capacities and best practices that enable communities and organizations most often left out of the information economy to harness the potential of technology. PTP exists to build an infrastructure that supports grassroots groups' use of information technologies to strengthen their efforts to create just communities.

After a quick overview of the electoral program lifecycle, we’ll dig into the technologies associated with electoral engagement with a special emphasis on the data cycle and data needs associated with doing voter work. We’ll use PTP’s new online Voter Tech Kit which draws on the electoral experience of organizers around the country as a resource. If you’re considering attending this workshop, we strongly suggest that you send at least two people from your organization – one organizer and one person who works with your organization’s technology; we’ve found that this combination greatly facilitates taking the learning home. Also if you’re already using electoral work as part of your community organizing efforts, come to share your experiences with other organizing groups. This session will be conducted in English. PTP strives to create an interactive and engaging training environment through the use of popular education techniques with an emphasis on sharing stories and experiences from the field.
