Organization Description

THIS WORKSHOP IS CANCELLED DUE TO A SCHEDULING CONFLICT. IF YOU WERE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING, PLEASE CONTACT LAURA TURIANO FOR MORE INFORMATION. The Peoples Health Movement (www.phmovement.org) exists to challenge the root causes of ill-health in our communities by bringing together health professionals, economists, journalists and health analysts with grassroots health workers and community activists in a united front to reveal unjust policies and develop healthier alternatives. In over 70 countries, and internationally, the People’s Health Movement (PHM) calls into question the social, economic and political forces that undermine people’s health and, in particular, the health of poor and marginalized people. PMH works for “Health for All NOW,” as expressed in its founding document, the People's Charter for Health (www.phmovement.org/en/resources/phcharter), the most widely endorsed consensus document on health since the Alma Ata Declaration of 1978. PHM-USA (www.phm-usa.org) is the US geographic circle of the international movement. PHM-USA believes that PHM's global perspective is relevant to the US health and health care crisis, and that a global perspective is needed to achieve universal, comprehensive primary health care in the US, and a healthier society. PHM USA efforts currently focus on building two new campaigns that will help strengthen activism in the US and link US activists with People’s Health Movement efforts world wide. These two campaigns are: Right to Health Care, and Right to Water.

Session Description

Internationally, there is a growing movement to develop economic, social, and cultural rights as tools for social justice. This is not a talking head panel, but a workshop in which you will learn how to analyze a health problem from a human rights perspective and develop strategies for change based on your analysis.

This two hour workshop will use a summary version of the Health Rights of Women Assessment Instrument to lead you through a human rights based evaluation of a health-related problem. Although there will not be enough time to complete a full assessment, by going through the summary questions you will learn about the right to health and the evaluation process, make some preliminary conclusions, and be able to continue the process later if you want.
A full assessment:
- produces comprehensive arguments to lobby for policies that improve the implementation of health rights;
- makes a direct link between health policy and relevant human rights issues;
- leads to a better understanding of the current situation, particularly the human rights impact of the policy;
- produces concrete proposals for what the government (or other "duty bearer") should do and what your organization will do to press the government into action.

You are encouraged to attend this workshop with others from your organization and to decide upon a health related problem or policy you would like to analyze before you arrive.

Workshop facilitators will be drawn from groups participating in the PHM Right to Health Care Campaign. How the rights based approach is being used in the campaign will be discussed and participants will be invited to join.

Oral interpretation and handouts in Spanish can be provided. If you need this, please let us know so we can be sure to have enough.
