This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 10:30am It will be held at: Room 1202 room at the Westin Hotel View scheduleOrganization DescriptionAfroEco is an organization of African Americans committed to environmental justice, eliminating environmental racism, and deeply involved in struggles for a just world. We realize that the systems of inequalities are deeply connected. We also realize that there is a substantial history of Black environmental thought that is neglected in the dominant struggles on sustainability and the environment. We lift up that history and those struggles. While we work with primarily with African American communities, we fully understand that movement building involves generating deep connections across gender, race, class, sexualities, and so on. And, to this we are deeply committed. Proposal Demographicsidentify as people of color Session Description" Black Environment Thought and Action: A Participatory Dialogue on Promoting Black Environmental thought and Action" This two hour workshop brings to the center of the USSF the intersection of the concept of "black environmental thought and practice" with movements for land reform, against economic inequality, for environmental justice, and for the multiple claims and rights of communities of color to participate equitably in the promotion of a more sane, environmentally and culturally sound approach to global justice. AfroEco proposes to do a participatory workshop to help participants "see" and "claim" the space to organize. Our focus is on 1) a collective naming and claiming of the historical forces that have impeded our well being around the intersections of economic, environmental, and social injustice 2) the development of an alternative vision and 3) the articulation of the appropriate next steps to take to realize the vision. We will utilize popular education strategies including locating participants' histories in the context of the struggles for Black environmental justice. We wil also have participants work in small groups and work on action steps to extend the discussion of Black environmental thought and actions given the high degree of environmental racism impacting Black communities in the U.S. First NameRose Last NameBrewer Contact E-mailbrewe001@umn.edu Proposing OrganizationAfroEco Organization Websitein construction Position or Titlemember Contact Telephone612-822-0617 Alternate Telephone612-578-2041 Event DayFriday, June 29th (Visioning / Envisioning Another World) Contact Address4716 1st Ave. S.
