Organization Description

Defenders Of Democracy is a non-profit grassroots group working to restore accountability and transparency to our election system, starting with a return to paper ballots. Without a paper ballot for every vote cast, computer programmers can control election outcomes without fear of detection. Defenders has been organizing in primarily in Georgia to return integrity to our voting system, by: investigating and reporting on election procedures; collecting evidence of election misconduct, corporate control, and ethics issues; assisting legal & judicial challenges to zero-evidence elections; helping author and lobby for legislation to restore paper ballots to our elections; engaging the media to report on election integrity issues and solutions; reframing the election process to create a culture where voters feel compelled to volunteer on election day.

Session Description

The Voting Integrity movement nationwide has been divided over solutions to restore transparent elections to the nation, yet for the sake of preventing fascism, we should be able to unite around core principles.

In Georgia, where civil rights leaders made history restoring the voting franchise to people of color in the 1960's, more than 90% of votes cast cannot be effectively recounted or audited since the introduction of electronic voting in 2002. In Georgia, both parties bought into the disinformation spread by unethical lobbyists tied to a voting machine company controlled by a convicted embezzler. Georgia taxpayers spent over $100 million on electronic voting systems without the basic safeguards used the fields of accounting and finance.

Despite this democratic tragedy, largely unreported on in Georgia, the Voting Integrity movement nationally has been divided on solutions to this crises, and has played into the hands of the corporate lobbyists who prefer a sham democracy to one person, one vote. While some activists are seeking legislative perfection, the neoliberals and lobbyists are united in stopping any change to their sham voting systems. We activists need to find common ground before the next election is upon us.
