This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Room 1406 room at the Westin Hotel View scheduleOrganization DescriptionEstablished in 1997, the Praxis Research and Education Center is an international network of researchers and activists based in Moscow, Russia. Praxis translates into Russian and publishes books by libertarian socialists, Marxist humanists, anarchists, sydicalists. Praxis also runs the Victor Serge Library, a collection of 6,000 donated Left books (feminism, labor, anti-imperialism, ecology) unavailable elsewhere in the ex-Soviet space. Praxis publishes FREE THOUGHT (in Russian) attacking Putin's war in Chechnya. We also provide direct aid and solidarity with Chechen refugees. Praxis also holds annual international conferences in July, and this year we are co-sponsoring in an environmental summer camp in Crimea (Ukraine) with various Russian ecological groups. We believe that capitalism has brought life on the planet near to the brink of catastrophe, and that a form of ecosocialism needs to emerge to replace capitalism before it is too late. How to get from here to there is the problem that requires analysis and activity. Our aim is to create an international network of ecosocialists by dialoging with others, sharing our ideas internationally at gatherings like the Left Forum in N.Y., and the WSF meetings in St. Petersburg, Mumbai, London and now Atlanta. Please see our website at www.praxiscenter.ru and my own site at www.invisible-international.org Proposal Demographicsare 65 years or older Session DescriptionPANEL TITLE: Ecosocialism vs. Capitalist Ecosuicide FORMAT: 2-hour discussion led by three panelists, each of whom will present for fifteen minutes before engaging in dialogue with the other participants. PANELIST ONE, Richard Smith, researcher and editor of the journal Capitalism, Nature Society will speak to the cross-theme of analysing of the problem of catastrophic climate changes by demonstrating the inevitable links between capitalism and ecoside. Richard has great slides to illustrate his talk PANELIST TWO, Richard Greeman PhD, ecosocialist writer and creater of 'The Revolutionary Kit,' will address the problem "How To Get There from Here?" by developing a theory of Utopia and revolutionary emergence based on international networking and the Internet. Richard uses humor and fantasy to present the results of 40 years of research. His cross-theme is "another world is possible." PANELEST THREE, David Hookes PhD, is a Marxist physicist at the University of Liverpool, who was active with the Liverpool dockers strike and has attended several WSF's. Dave will deal with the topic of positive and negative Utopias by critiquing the Russian Communist approach to ecology and proposing technologically feasible democratic Ecosocialism as an alternative. Dave's cross-themes are "historical and international dimensions" and '"another world." Participants will be provided with handouts and encouraged to join in our international network and invited, if interested, participate in our conference on the same theme in the Crimea (Ukraine) later in July.
