This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Brookwood Room room at the Baymont Hotel View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThis proposal is co-sponsored by 4 organizations, Atlanta Anarchists, New York Metro Anarchist Alliance (NYMAA), Capital terminus Collective, (CTC), and Workers Solidarity Alliance (WSA). [Note: The WSA sent in their registration via the post office the other day, so you should have it shortly.]. To highlight the history and or mission of any one of these groups would be doing a disservice to the others.
The groups all have stlawart backgrounds in social anarchism, with emphasis being placed on DIY ethics, non-heriarchical structures, voluntary association, direct action, and community awareness/actions.
Atlanta Anarchists was started in 2006 as a response to the constand barrage of hate emanting from anti-immigrant groups like The Minutemen. We also particpated in actions with Atlanta Palestine Solidarity and have recently been involved with creating a Continental Anarchist Network. Our members come from all walks of life and reprsent a varied age/ethic spectrum.
Capital Terminus is a collective based in Atlanta, GA. The two groups share some members and strategy. Some members of CTC are affiliated with the local infoshop, Madratz. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women are 25 years old or younger are artists/cultural workers Session DescriptionThe main idea that we wish for particpants to take away from our session is the idea that the anti-authoritarian/anarchist community and the progressive community have much that we can learn from each other, and we feel as though there is not enough communication/networking between the two. We would like to impart a clearer understanding of anarchism, current anarchist struggles, how these struggles and the progressive communti's struglles overlap, and how we can be responsive to the needs of each other. We would also like to highlight non-hierarchical structures from a perspective slightly different from the progressive one. Our biggest adversary is the fact that people misunderstand what anarchists do, what we think, and why we do it. We will start with handouts/zines from anarchist/anti-authoritarian groups from across the country, showcasing the struggles against corporatism, neoliberalism, free trade agreements, homelessness, oppressive city government regulations. These handouts will also spotlight the various non-authroittative structures that we have built in response to problems and issues, as well as introduce all of us to new strains of anarchist theory (anarcha-feminism, anarcho-queer, black anarchism, anarchosyndicalism, etc.) Welcome and Intro (10 min.) By Nathan Compton Jones-a quick overview of why we are doing this, what anarchism is in a nutshell, and an introduction of the program for the particpants. Ya Basta! By James, Moose*, and Carter of NYMAA-Ya Basta! is a new, non-violent action paradigm being utilized by NYMAA to bring a myho-poetic experience to protest. (30 min.) Biodisel-By Corey Deyette of Atl. Anarchists-Biodiesel is being bandied about as the next step in energy reform. Corey will break down DIY biodiesel in Atl., its good points, bad points, and how you can make your car into a biodiesel-using machine! (25 min.) Occupational Insurrection-by Nathan Jones of Atl. Anarchists-A praxis about how to effectively get ideas across within the workplace in an age when the power of the union is decling by the second. Emphasis on one-on-one organizations tactics. (20 min.) Small Groups-We will ask the audience to break up into groups at this point to discuss what they have heard and read, and to get questions, etc. ready for the panel. ( 1 hour) Panel-A panel discussion on anarchy and anti-authoritian ideas today, how far they can go, and why they are useful/necessary. This will contain various alternatives within it from radically different perspectives. Panel=Briana Hernandez, anti-authoritarian Student activist, Tom Wetzel, WSA Member, Nathan Jones, Atl. Anarchists, Cullen Byrnes, CTC, Shafik Alavarez, CTC, and Moose, NYMAA. The panel will discuss the various challenges and philosophies for 45 min. to an hour, at which point the remainder of the time will be allocated to particpants' questions, concerns, obervations, etc. *For the NYMAA members, their real names are revealed under their registration. Alas, I only know them as they introduced themselves to me. -proposal is in English. We have a few Spanish speakers, but at this time, none have stepped up to translate. However, that could change in the future, and we hope that it does.
