This session will be on: June 28, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Auditorium - Fourth Floor room at the Auburn Avenue Research Library View scheduleOrganization DescriptionAlliance for Responsible Trade is the U.S. chapter of the Hemispheric Social Alliance (HSA), formed in the mid 90's initally of groups working against the passage of NAFTA. Has continued working against the current trade model and other ways which the U.S. maintains global dominance. Member organizations include farm, student, womens and environmental groups, NGOs, unions etc. Have worked with the HSA to coordinate actions throughout the hemisphere and write the document "Alternatives for the Americas", offering concrete alternatives to the current model. Session Description4-hour workshop merged with 2634 The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), or NAFTA on steriods! This session will be a panel of 2 participants from each of the three countries (all members of the Hemispheric Social Alliance) who have been working together to unearth and publicize this new generation of corporate banditry. After many months of wrangling, we now have the first documents which have been turned over by the U.S. government under a Freedom of Information Inquiry. By the time of the forum we hope to have additional documents and the latest information on who the principal actors are, so that together we can develop strategies to expose and confront those seeking to control our future. The workshop could most easily be conductied in Spanish, although some of the panelists will speak both Spanish and English. We have not yet worked out the issues of translation for this workshop, although we can explore the possibilities of borrowing headsets. We will have handouts in both Spanish and English. In the case of challenges, this is a topic that is known by a very limited number of people. We hope that by providing new and previously unknown information, we can mobilize additional people to challenge this threat to all of our futures.
