Organization Description

Queer Playback Theatre is one of numerous spin-offs of the International Playback Theatre Network. Playback Theatre is improvised based on true stories told spontaneously by audience members. It is used to honor the stories of individuals, and to build community among those witnessing and participating in a playback event. Playback Theatre was founded by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas in 1975, and has been used in many environments where communiity building and/or conflict resolution is a goal, including hurricane and tsunami relief, creating dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis, empowering people of "lower" castes in India, etc. Mountaine Mort Jonas is convener of this workshop. He was founder of the Flamingo Freedom Band of South Florida, the Off-the-Stonewall Street Theatre Players, and EarthStage Productions – all in the late 1980s and early 1990s - all dedicated to various forms of consciousness raising through performance. He is a certified Practitioner of playback theatre, has 13 years of experience performing in and teaching playback theatre, and has made a specialty of working with queer people (specifically of the radical faerie tribe) who are new to playback. Committee please note: Although I am offering this workshop specifically for queer people, I feel strongly that it should not pre-empt the proposal from the International Playback Theatre Network, of which I am a part. Please do not consider this proposal a substitute for the important work which has been proposed by Susan Metz, and please do not select this workshop unless at least 2 of her 3 proposals are accepted and assigned time slots. If possible, if you choose to schedule this on Friday, along with Susan’s proposed Friday panel, please try to choose different times, so I can attend the panel. Thank you for all you are doing to bring forward a better world! - Mountaine

Session Description

This workshop is intended to provide a rare opportunity for queer activists to listen carefully to each other’s stories of how they got where they are in their lives, and in what directions they see themselves and the queer community headed. The value of offering this work for a specifically queer group is to enhance the sense of community of participants, strengthening their ability to trust each other in their interactions with the wider world.

In this workshop, the group will warm up with theatre games (great fun!), and then try out the basic forms of playback theatre as it is taught around the world, using these forms to enact personal stories told by workshop participants. The language will be English. Handouts in English will be provided to assist participants in using playback theatre in their community work at home.

This workshop fits into Friday’s theme in that participants will experience each other’s stories with depth and compassion. In the world envisioned by the presenter, the stories of others are honored and respected, and this is a basis for true compassion and cooperation. Playback is a proven tool to elicit these reactions within groups of diverse people. The main challenges in playback theatre stem from the trust which needs to be established between storytellers and actors. Once a storyteller feels confident that a story will be respected by the actors (and then by the audience), it is often amazing how much they share of themselves, and how cathartic that sharing is when played back immediately after it is told, with craft and insight, by performers eager to honor what they have just heard.

An older queer white guy, Mountaine intends to co-facilitate this workshop with other experienced playback performers, ideally young queer people of color, and is in the stage of recruiting these co-facilitators at the time this proposal is being submitted.

Email sent this morning to Mike Gasser:

Hi Mike. I'm submitting a proposal. Susan Metz THINKS she included me in 5 registrations she purchased a while back, so I'm going to hold off on paying for a separate registration until I hear from you. Could you check that for me? Thanks!

Hiya Walda. I emailed Mike a few days ago about changing the name of the organization to the International Playback Theatre Network, and he said he did that. With this change, YES, it is registered.

Thanks so much,
Mountaine
