This session will be on: June 29, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: NOT ADA - Community Room room at the Inman Park United Methodist Church View scheduleOrganization DescriptionUnited Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) is an international grassroots student movement of campuses and individual students fighting for sweatshop free labor conditions and workers' rights abroad and at home by working in solidarity with workers. USAS believes that university standards should be brought inline with those of its students, who demand that their school's logo is emblazoned on clothing made in decent working conditions and that their universities respect the rights of workers on campuses to organize. USAS has more than 250 affiliated campuses across the United States and Canada. Our goals as an organization is to make schools accountable for labor standards. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women identify as people of color are 25 years old or younger are immigrants (not born in U.S.) Session DescriptionSince United Students Against Sweatshops' (USAS) creation is 1997, students across the country have fought to ensure that their universities are held accountable for labor rights. Our universities play an important role in the world economy with a four billion dollar industry in apparel and being some of the largest employers in the commnities where they are located. It is with this understanding that USAS has been working in solidarity with campus workers, whether that be on a living wage campaign or adopting codes of conduct to ensure universities respect a workers' right to organize. This workshop is for workers and students who wish to learn how to get involved and change the way schools do business. As an organization, USAS has had many victories and has grown as an organization; yet, there are still challenges we face. One being that working with students means constant turnover. This is something that is the reality of student organizing. This workshop is connected to the USSF themes because it deals with labor and the way that young people can affect labor rights. The participants will engage by taking home with them some of the information and examples we provide and taking that home to make a real change. The workshop will be conducted in English. I speak Sspanish and if translation is needed I can do it in Spanish. However, the materials that are going to be passed out will be in English.
