To help build a nation- and worldwide movement for a cooperative social economy based on democratic and responsible production, conscientious consumption, and use of capital to further social and economic justice. We are a project of the Ecological Democracy Institute of North American and produce a quarterly newsletter on the solidarity economy around the world, particularly worker ownership. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women identify as people of color Session Description"Re-creating the New city: Worker Ownership in an African American Context" is an interactive workshop to introduce participants to the concept of democratic community-based eocnomic development and ways that worker owned businesses contribute to their community and to community economic development. Discussion will focus on needs of marginalized communities and explore the history of African American worker cooperatives and community owned businesses. Participants will be tasked with identifying needs in their communities and designing the elements of a "new city" - to make a presentation to a fictitious town or city council about what kinds of businesses to develop and why.
