This session will be on: June 30, 2007 - 3:30pm It will be held at: NOT ADA - Community Room room at the Javology View scheduleOrganization DescriptionOriginally founded in 2003, the League of Young Voters Education Fund (LYVEF) incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization in September 2004. Our mission is to support young people to build power to create solutions in their own communities nationwide.
Our core program is to build permanent comprehensive youth civic engagement and leadership development organizations in six states: Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Maine, California, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Each local LYVEF affiliate conducts a comprehensive year-round program which includes outreach, leadership development, training, arts-based organizing, alliance building and non-partisan voter engagement. We believe that focusing locally is the most effective way to build significant power and deeply engage young people in the democratic process. Proposal Demographicsidentify as people of color are 25 years old or younger are artists/cultural workers Session DescriptionSo you are having a hard time getting politicians to take your agenda seriously? Chances are you don’t have the necessary people power to affect their decision-making. This power mapping session will give organizers an opportunity to assess their organization's power, and give insights into how power can be built in their local areas. Participants will leave this workshop empowered to identify issues important to young people, with a special concentration on urban communities of color. They will learn how to take the power building process from start to finish including: identifying a base, creating a buzz, organizing, rallying around an issue(s), keeping folks engaged and leveraging numbers in people-power to make a positive impact inside and outside of electoral politics. Representatives from The League of Young Voters Education Fund will work with participants to determine the needs, tools and potential of their communities. Attendees will hear firsthand success stories and pitfalls to be aware of when organizing for civic engagement and against out-of-touch power structures. This session will be conducted in English.
