with migrants who are crossing into the boundaries of the United States. With millions of
migrants crossing outside of official points of entry these civilian groups meet a fair share
of migrants. ‘No More Deaths’ a self-described humanitarian group, places water bottles
at frequently crossed areas as well as feeds and provides medical care for open wounds,
blisters and the like. Operating in that same area are the ‘Minutemen Civil Defense
Corps’, a self-described national citizens neighborhood watch, they report migrants to the
government Border Patrol who then arrest and deport them.
We live in an age of migration and our interaction with its discourse and resulting
peoples often become entangled in the heated political discourse of broadcast media
leaving most people confused about what’s happening in the border region. Here is a
clear-cut observation into the lives of people who through peace and conflict determine
that these migrants are either in danger or are dangerous.
Some migrants are meet with water, some with guns, others both at once but what’s
worse is to be meet with none. In the crossing region of Arizona alone, 206 deaths were
reported for fiscal year 2006. On average, 2 people die a day crossing along the 1952
mile long border.
In the heat of the summer of 06, U.S. Government Border Patrol arrest two
humanitarian aid workers. This action sparks an outcry from Minutemen members that
the No More Death volunteers, and other humanitarian groups are criminals by way of
aiding and embedding illegal presence in the United States. The Humanitarian group
announces a campaign called ‘Humanitarian Aid is not a crime’. Lawyers are summoned
and it’s the Government v.s. NMD. Film Contact Websitewww.nexusifc.com Forum ThemesMigration, Borders, Representation, NGO actions.
This film deals head on with the emerging xenophobia towards a population that lives in the shadows of American society. Its also examines humanitarian actions taken to help those in need. We live in an ever increasing 'age of migration'. Filmmakers AvailableYes Screening ConsiderationsWe are an independent film collective based in Sweden and the US. This is our first documentary production. We meet Alice Lovelace of the Social Forum and Anne Olson of Amnesty International while we were doing field work in CD Juarez Mexico at the 'Border Social Forum' 2006. Lovelace and Olson invited us to have our first showing of our documentary at the Social Forum in Atlanta and we accepted. We are still in postproduction and will be done by the end of June. Thus we have no preview or trailer to show you. We would love to participate and speak during the showing. Both Filip and I are graduates of Malmö University school of International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). Thank you for your consideration. Submittion Agreementyes |
