Please Send this letter to your congressperson: Dear Congressperson: I support the Caribbean American community. Several issues have come to my attention recently which have compelled me to call your office and to write this letter asking that you address these issues on my behalf and on behalf of others who live in your constituency, who vote, who contribute to campaigns and who pay taxes. First, there are deplorable conditions with regard to medical care of many people, including immigrants, who are being detained and questioned or investigated due to their immigration status. There have also been concerns for many years about deportations of Caribbean American felons. There has been a lack of communication regarding these deportees and lack of capacity to effectively resettle them without creating an increase in the crime rates in the small nation states of the Caribbean. The consequences of these actions are far reaching and beg correction. In addition, more recently, there has been a plan to implement a policy that would require a passport for any U.S. Citizen who wants to travel to Caribbean Islands. This concerns me because it is my belief that such a policy would inevitably cause a chilling effect on the tourism industries of the Caribbean and would lead to devastating consequences for Caribbean economies. I call on you to address these concerns by (1) investigating the need for medical care in detention facilities including for immigrant detainees – there are many Caribbean medical professionals whom I’m sure would be willing to provide services to these populations if there was a mechanism through which they could provide assistance. (2) investigate and propose that some form of financial assistance is provided for resettlement of deportees and for their transition back to their respective countries. (3) Do not support the implementation of the policy of requiring passports for travel to the Caribbean. Thank you for taking the time to read this correspondence. I look forward to your response. Sincerely,
