Organization Description

Agricultural Missions, Inc (AMI) is an ecumenical agency working in solidarity with rural people's organizations and social movements to defend sustainable, small-scale family and community based farming and healthy food and land. We aim to facilitate the strengthening of the rural sector to defend against the onslaught of corporate monopoly and industrialized agriculture, and to educate and raise consciousness about the economic and agricultural policies aimed to displace the people of the land, among the churches and the general society. The organization was founded in 1930 and since the 1970s has taken on the solidarity and accompaniment role, with gender equity and racial equality as transversal principles.

Session Description

AMI would field a panel to stimulate thought and make connections among interrelated sectors related to healthy food, economic justice for farmers and farmworkers, and sustainable models of agriculture. This would be followed by a wide ranging dialog with participants with an eye to building common actions. These actions would be oriented towards strengthening on-going campaigns for justice for farmworkers (CIW, FLOC, others), towards reforming the US Farm Bill 2007, combatting market busting trade agreements and international top down policy (ie WTO, IMF, WB, IDB, etc...), and towards strengthening the Fair Trade and Sustainable Agriculture Movements, including efforts to rebuild local food economies.
