This session will be on: June 28, 2007 - 3:30pm It will be held at: Centennial Ballroom A room at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown View scheduleOrganization DescriptionThe Backbone Campaign works to awaken and inspire Americans to build the progressive movement, reclaim our government, and secure a future worthy of our children. We provide creative visibility and accountability tools to attract media attention, energize citizens and organizations, and reward political courage. Our sister organization, Progressive Government, propels the progressive movement toward running the country by identifying and promoting leaders who articulate and champion a progressive agenda.
The Backbone Campaign formed in 2003 by a group of artists building creative expressions of peace, political courage, and street theater. The Backbone Campaign has since become a leader in the use of metaphor, art and spectacle through its projects such as the Bush Chain Gang, Freeway Bannering, parading with its 70 foot puppet of a giant backbone with progressive issue slogans interconnecting the vertebrae, Backbone Patrol, Backbone Awards, and other creative tools. We have also developed an online platform, the Backbone Platform, which presents a unified progressive vision and is available to groups and individuals to use in their caucus processes. Finally, we have our Backbone Cabinet, a progressive Cabinet Roster of individuals nominated as progressive alternatives to the Bush Administration Cabinet. Citizens have nominated a diverse body of individuals to positions such as Secretary of Agriculture (Dolores Huerta), Secretary of State (Howard Zinn), Secretary of Energy (Amory Lovins), Chairperson of the FCC (Ambrose Lane), and other positions. (See http://www.backbonecampaign.org/cabinet/)
From this diverse roster, we have produced free downloadable podcasts of Conversations with these Progressive Shadow Cabinet members. Over 50 Conversations with the Cabinet have taken place where progressive policy and movement leaders articulate a vision of "Another World" and propose real solutions to our nation's confounding problems.
Concurrent with the USSF, we will launch the next phase of our Progressive Cabinet Project by calling forth a Progressive Cabinet Summit, Tuesday, June 26th, in Atlanta, GA. We are inviting 25-50 Progressive Policy Leaders and Leaders of the Progressive Movement to meet, articulate and refine eight Priorities for the 2008 Election Season, and to develop a media strategy for disseminating a progressive solution and vision to the nation. Based on the Eight Priorities we will, with the help of Liberty News TV, begin filming Progressive Infomercials; each 3 minute Infomercial will focus on one Progressive Priority.
We will also commission large, iconic representations of the Eight Priorities for a travelling Procession for the Future, the first of which we hope will be at the USSF on Saturday, June 30th (proposal pending).

Our goal was to demonstrate that the progressive movement is not merely an oppositional, but also propositional movement, and that we are not content running campaigns, but preparing to run the country. In June 2007, just prior to the US Social Forum, we will convene the first ever Progressive Cabinet Summit where our leaders will gather to refine and endorse Eight People’s Priorities for the 2008 election season, and to design a strategic system for communicating a progressive vision for America. We propose a session at the USSF where we can report on the outcomes of the Cabinet Summit, present the Eight Policy Priorities, and introduce some of the Cabinet members. Presenters will include Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign and various members of the Backbone Progressive Cabinet and Progressive Movement Leaders. We envision a panel presentation(s) with opportunities to work in smaller groups to build collaboration and cross-fertilization for advancing the idea of a Cabinet. Small group discussions will also focus on inclusion of other allies’ work, brainstorming imagery for conveying the Eight Priorities, developing a media strategy, and ideas for Infomercials and a dynamic Procession for the Future. The Backbone Campaign is committed to collaboration, positive, propositional messaging, creativity, and inclusion of voices of diversity. Progressives have the leaders and ideas to run the country. A Progressive Shadow Cabinet is a way to communicate that to the grassroots and progressive movements and to the nation. In our webcast Conversation with Howard Zinn, he endorsed the Progressive Shadow Cabinet and Summit, based upon the need for We the People to replace current institutions when they are no longer responsive to the needs of the people. The Backbone Campaign has identified an interlocking agenda, based on common values supported and endorsed across the various sub-movements. The Progressive Cabinet expresses the unity of our movement and will be augmented through the creative use of media (ex. Infomercials) and the creation and touring of a Procession for the Future. The biggest challenge/adversary we face is the oppositional frame of progressive activists and the inability for many to collaborate outside their issue silos. Our presentation will be given in English and we will attempt to provide Spanish Translation. It is doubtful that we can bring our own headset/transmitter but will work on finding a translator. We will provide handouts in both english and spanish. This Session will propose ideas, but it will also be a time to give input on the evolution of this project. Legitimacy is central to the success and that legitimacy must be based on participation and a transparent process. Your input will help us sculpt this into a truly powerful movement tool.
