Organization Description

Earth Charter US ECUS) is the national office for the Earth Charter International Initiative. The Earth Charter's 16 principles for eocnomic justice, human rights, respect for nature and a culture of peace were written by thousands of people in 78 countries over the course of ten years and launched at The Hague Peace Palace, where Earth Charter US was recognized as leading the major effort in the US. In 2001, ECUS launched the Earth Charter (EC) via Earth Charter Community Summits in 12 cities connected by satellite. Over 50 cities have participated in the annual Summits, which bring people together to engage them in making the EC a reality through integration into school lesson plans, university curricula and degrees, professional codes of ethics, business corporate social responsibility programs, community actions, personal lifestyles and grassroots initiatives like Earth Scouts for boys and girls 3 to 13 years of age. ECUS supports the Earth Charter Community Alliance, an informal network of organizers across the country. ECUS represents the Earth Charter in UN Commission for Sustainable Development Education Caucus.

Session Description

The session will be conducted in English and an interpretor who speaks Spanish will be present. Participants will learn about a new relational framework for globalization that is demonstrated by an extraordinary confluence on the global stage of a global shift in values, a populist International Declaration of Interdependence and a world body that serves as a global moral compass for international and national treaties and policies. They will learn how this relational framework is being enacted through community financial institutions, relocalization of food and energy programs, school lesson plans, business models, and personal lifestyle choices. They will also learn about the interconnection of issues that contribute to problems like global warming and poverty as well as national policy making like the Presidential Climate Change Action Plan and model programs like Earth Scouts and League of Earth Charter Voters. They will create their own action plan and be able to join the national network that is currently sharing and exchanging ideas/activities based on this relational framework. The biggest challenge our movement faces is getting the information about it known and we are launching in June an Internet Campaign modeled after the Howard Dean presidential campaign to build a huge on-line community to make the relational framework of the Earth Charter a reality in every US town and city.
