Organization Description

The Ruckus Society sees itself as a toolbox of experience, training, and skills. We provide instruction on the application of tactical and strategic tools to a growing number of organizations and individuals from around the world in skill shares and trainings that are designed to move a campaign forward. We do this work in strong collaboration with our partner organizations, working together to define and create the training agenda. Additionally, the Ruckus Society is dedicated to fostering leadership of those most affected by the injustice and oppression we struggle against. Therefore, in all our initiatives, we aim to prioritize the voices and visions of youth, women, people of color, indigenous people and immigrants, poor and working class people, lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender queer, and transgendered people, and other historically marginalized communities.

Session Description

Thousands upon thousands of folks (estimated 20,000+) from movements all across the United States will be converging at the US Social Forum to build a powerful movement in this country based on the organized voices and experiences of those from the grassroots most affected by US and global injustices. With the Department of Homeland Security and PATRIOT Act criminalizing dissent and the increased focus on electoral politics after the debacles in 2000 and 2004, it is more crucial than ever for us to re-invigorate the culture of direct action in this country.

The Trainings
The Ruckus Society is collaborating with Art in Action, Midnight Special Legal Collective, and smartMeme/STORY to provide a direct action skills and tactics track at the US Social Forum.

Introduction to Nonviolent Direct Action / Direct Action prep
For the group that is new to the concepts, this training provides an interactive introduction to Nonviolent Direct Action and Civil Disobedience. Participants identify the benefits of using NVDA, explore what makes an action effective, and clarify their personal beliefs about what nonviolence means. This workshop will help groups prepare for an upcoming action. It'll start by looking closely at the action scenario, making sure the group has solid plans for direct action roles, decision-making processes, safety, and messaging. After assessing the action, the group uses role-plays to practice de-escalation skills and street tactics.

Blockades
Learn the basic principles behind using blockades as a tactic for nonviolent direct action. Practice blockades skills with and without equipment.
