This session will be on: June 28, 2007 - 1:00pm It will be held at: Sanctuary room at the Trinity United Methodist Church View scheduleOrganization Description THE APPALACHIAN WOMEN'S ALLIANCE has been addressing issues of racism, homophobia, violence against women, poverty and privilege and the environment for 20 years. The Alliance is a movement of women and girls who are raising consciousness and self-esteem, sharing leadership and power, developing a collective anaylsis, creating a common vision, and taking collective action. Challenging traditional stereotypes, we are black, white and Cherokee, wage earners and welfare mothers, rural and urban, straight and gay, seven to seventy, with and without traditional education. Together, we are working for economic justice, human rights and dignity and safety for women and children in Appalachian communities.
Our APPALACHIAN WOMEN'S JOURNAL and NEWSLETTER allow Appalachian women to speak to one another and to the rest of the world in our own words. Our WOMEN'S CARAVAN enables women to raise awareness of issues in our own communities and to reach out to others living in isolated areas. Our CLINCHCO CENTER is a model for what all of us can accomplish in our communitites. WORKSHOPS AND SISTER GATHERINGS are safe spaces to work on self-esteem and leadership skills, and to become more educated about the issues affecting our communities, our nation and our world. IRONWEED and MOUNTAIN WOMEN RISING lift up the struggles and triumps of Appalachian women through prose, poetry, story and song, while educating, challenging and inspiring others both inside and outside the region to become members, allies and friends. Proposal Demographicsidentify as women identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gendered, queer) identify as people of color are 25 years old or younger are artists/cultural workers are 65 years or older Session DescriptionMOUNTAIN WOMEN RISING is a 45-60 minute performance presentation that is comprised of stories, songs and poems written BY, FOR and ABOUT Appalachian women. The performance conveys a strong sense of culture and place, while addressing issues of violence against women, racism, homophobia, poverty and the environment. The material used in the performance is taken from our Appalachian Women's Journal and this performance is yet another way to lift up the voices and issues of Appalachian women. Visit our website at: www.appalachianwomen.org. We would like for the audience to take away a better understanding of the people and issues of Appalachia, to realize what common struggles we all share, that in the specific we find the universal. We would like for them to be INSPRIED to TELL their OWN stories and to realize how important that is for people and for communities. Every aspect of the work of the Appalachian Women's Alliance and of this performances presentation reflects the mission of the USSF and the work it is doing on a larger scale. The Alliance hopes to represent a much needed Appalachian voice at the USSF forum. We are eager and excited to be a part of this larger work, to take action alongside other artists, community folks and activists who are doing this same work and who share this common vision for a better world. The performance will be conducted in English. Thank you for consideration of this proposal. Hi Rema,
I'm really excited to see you'll be at the USSF. We're driving in from Texas but won't be there until Friday noon or so.
My new film is scheduled at the Atlanta Central Library Auditorium on Friday at 3:20. Will you come and let other folks know? Morristown is full of strong Appalachian women. There's a trailer on my website is www.annelewis.org
Solidarity,
