RESOLUTION ON PORT MILITARIZATION RESISTANCERESOLUTION ON PORT MILITARIZATION RESISTANCE FOR CONSIDERATION AT THE PEOPLES MOVEMENT ASSEMBLY AT THE ATLANTA CIVIC CENTER, SUNDAY JULY 1, 2007. WHEREAS, the Port Militarization Resistance project, in the South Puget Sound area of Washington State, has successfully stopped the shipments of military equipment through the public ports of Olympia and Tacoma; and WHEREAS, this success was made possible by an alliance of Veterans for Peace, student organizations such as Students for a Democratic Society, the justice and peace movements, segments of the labor movement such as the Industrial Workers of the World, and many other community organizations; and WHEREAS, this alliance used a variety of tactics to educate the broader public, such as attending public hearings, trainings on knowing your rights, media outreach, direct action and civil disobedience, and the use of affinity groups. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we call upon all groups and individuals participating in this historic, first ever U.S. Social Forum to implement its anti-war mission by disconnecting all our public ports from the military machine. AND, FURTHERMORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that all groups and individuals participating in the USSF reclaim the use of our public ports for peaceful purposes.
